The original cast of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, including screenwriter Nia Vardalos as Toula, John Corbett as her husband Ian, Andrea Martin as Aunt Voula, and Joey Fatone as Cousin Angelo, is reuniting for a sequel! Due to be released in March 2016 (14 years after the original hit theaters), the movie will reportedly focus on a new wedding and Toula and Ian's experience as parents. Vardalos and Corbett spoke about the new movie on The Today Show Friday, revealing that plans for a sequel had always hinged on Vardalos.
"The reason I didn't want to do the sequel is because at the end of the first one, I had written that we were parents," Vardalos said. "And in reality, I was not a parent. Even though I make stuff up, I couldn't write from a place of emotions that I didn't know."
Now a mother herself, Vardalos finally got her inspiration. And Corbett said he didn't need convicing to sign up for another round.
"The truth is, I didn't think it was over," Corbett said. "After a decade of hearing, 'Hmm, I don't know, I don't have any ideas really,' I just sort of gave up. And so it was really a huge surprise when – I guess just about this time last year – she called and said, 'I got an idea. What do you think? Do you want to do it?' And nobody on this team was happier than me."
