The Dos and Don'ts of Proposing

Make sure you pop the question the right way.

There is definitely no one-size-fits-all guide to proposing, since every person and relationship is different; however, there are still plenty of things to keep in mind before you put your plan into motion.

Engagement season is officially upon us! If you are planning to pop the question soon, it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. However, we are here to help! There is definitely no one-size-fits-all guide to proposing, since every person and relationship is different. On the other hand, there are still plenty of things to keep in mind before you put your plan into motion.

There is also a chance you are the one anticipating a proposal and you’re going to send a not-so-subtle hint to your sweetheart by sending them this link. Either way, the following dos and don’ts should help the moment be the dream come true you both have always hoped it would be.

- Do keep your partner’s wishes in mind. Will your beloved want you to obtain the blessing of their parents or not? Would a public proposal make them swoon or die of embarrassment? What is a dream for one person is a nightmare for another. Keep that in mind while planning.

- Don’t be completely spontaneous. Even someone who wants a private proposal will want to know some thought was put into it. Blurting out “Will you marry me?” out of nowhere might also make your significant other question your sincerity, wondering if you really mean it or were just caught up in the moment.

- Do be flexible. Even though a plan is important, there is always the chance something will go wrong. The perfect hiking trail is closed due to rain? Consider a romantic dinner at home instead. It’s always helpful to have some options in case you need a backup plan.

- Don’t tell everyone. Your ideas for the perfect proposal should be on a need-to-know basis. Loved ones will be excited for you, but there is also a chance they will spill the beans. Unless someone is helping you with an integral part of your proposal, they can find out once you announce the engagement.

- Do consider timing. Most people will want to be at their photogenic best when accepting a proposal, so popping the question right after exercising or a long day at work might not be the best time.

- Don’t overthink things. You’ve hopefully already discussed the next step of your relationship before you bought a ring and know that you’ll get a “yes” once you ask. If stressing over how to do it is delaying you asking the question, it’s better to keep things simple.
