On a visit to Munich, Germany, Kate Bowling and Brock Schoenlein enjoyed a leisurely day of exploring the city and checking out the local fare, including sampling beer at the famous Hofbräuhaus. The couple went for a stroll in a park that took an unexpected turn. “Brock stopped me, got down on one knee, and proposed. No frills, no flash, no onlookers,” notes Kate. “It was such a happy moment.”
When selecting the site for their nuptials, Kate couldn’t think of a more fitting place than her parents’ farm. On a crisp September day, friends and family gathered for the ceremony in a red barn. Ferns and tin tubs filled with foliage, as well as purple and mint hydrangeas, decorated the edge of the interior second level of the structure.
Bridesmaids in flowing ash grey frocks were accompanied by groomsmen attired in slate grey suits. Kate and her father arrived in one of their family’s antique horse-drawn carriages. A little boy in short pants, suspenders, a polka dot bow tie, and a newsboy cap rang small cowbells to announce the bride’s approach.
Seeing Brock beneath the wood arch entwined with verdure at the end of the aisle took Kate’s breath away. She was glowing in a sleeveless fit-and-flare lace gown with a satin sash. A floral headpiece and veil adorned her classic updo. Kate carried a country bouquet composed of greenery accented with white roses and chartreuse hydrangeas.
Enjoying the fair weather, the festivities moved to an open-sided tent set on a grassy area following the ceremony. Italian elements permeated the reception design. Refreshments during the cocktail hour included sparkling lemon punch to be poured into an array of elegant glassware and a full bar placed on wood barrels – a luscious antipasti table was likewise displayed. Arranged on a shabby chic dresser, postcards of Italy were propped on wine corks and used as place cards.
Country tables showcased neutral-toned tablecloths, runners, and napkins as well as garlands of foliage and candles. Served family style, loved ones savored delicious Italian dishes upon modern square plates juxtaposed with round chargers. In lieu of a wedding cake, the couple opted for a dessert table offering a variety of pastries. At the end of the night, guests received a taste of the celebration to take home: herb olive oil prepared by Kate using local ingredients.
On a day brimming with significant moments, the one that most resonated with the bride was when Brock took the microphone to thank friends and family for their presence. “Everyone here has touched our lives in some way, and it’s so special for us to have everyone we love in the same tent,” he said. Kate concurs, “It truly was the gathering of all our people in one place that made the day incredible and so full of love.”
